Municipal Elections 2010

Elections for the Municipality of West Grey will take place on Monday, October 25, 2010 for the following offices:

Offices to be Elected:

Mayor

one (1) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

Deputy Mayor

one (1) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

Councillor

seven (7) to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey

English Language Public School Board Trustee

one to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey and Town of Hanover

English Language Separate School Board Trustee

one to be elected by all electors in the Municipality of West Grey, Township of Southgate, Municipality of Grey Highlands, and Town of Hanover

French Language Public School Board Trustee

one to be elected by all electors in the Counties of Bruce, Grey, Simcoe and Dufferin

French Language Separate School Board Trustee

one to be elected by all electors in the Counties of Oxford, Perth and Grey

Nominations:

Nomination papers may be filed by candidates or an agent commencing on January 4, 2010 through September 9, 2010 during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Monday to Friday and on Nomination Day, Friday, September 10, 2010 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Nomination papers and other documentation required with a nomination are available from the West Grey Municipal Office, City Hall, 402813 Grey Road 4, RR 2, DURHAM ON N0G 1R0. A candidates guide will be available in January 2010.

At the time of filing, each candidate must pay the prescribed nomination fee ($200 for the office of Mayor and $100 for all other offices) by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order, payable to the Municipality of West Grey.

Eligibility to Vote:

To be an eligible elector in the Municipality of West Grey, you have to be:

A Canadian citizen;
At least 18 years of age;
Reside in the Municipality of West Grey or be an owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of West Grey, or the spouse of an owner of tenant in the Municipality of West Grey; and
Not be prohibited from voting under any law

It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether they are qualified to be an elector to hold the office for which they are nominated. Persons wishing to seek elected municipal or board of education offices should read the relevant legislation and regulations regarding qualifications required for the office (i.e. the Municipal Act, the Education Act, the Municipal Elections Act).

Campaign Expenses:

Candidates are required to file a nomination prior to commencing campaign activities, including raising campaign funds and incurring campaign expenses.

January 4, 2010 to September 9, 2010	Nominations may be filed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday in the West Grey Municipal Office
September 10, 2010	Nomination Day: Nominations may be filed from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the West Grey Municipal Office
September 10, 2010	Last Day for a candidate to withdraw a nomination (2:00 p.m. deadline)
September 13, 2010	Certification of nomination papers before 4:00 p.m. List of candidates declared elected by acclamation to be posted after 4:00 p.m.
September 15, 2010	Additional Nominations: In the event that sufficient nominations have not been received to fill any particular office, additional nominations may be filed from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the West Grey Municipal Office
September 16, 2010	List of candidates declared elected by acclamation to be posted
October 2, 2010, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., October 8, 2010, 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., October 16, 2010, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm.	Advance Votes - Location: West Grey Municipal Office
October 25, 2010	Voting Day: Voting places are open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. except for specific locations such as nursing homes and retirement homes, etc. which have reduced voting hours. (Copy of By-law identifying locations and specific times will be available at a later date)
October 26, 2010	Clerk to declare Official Results
December 31, 2010	End of campaign period
January 3, 2011	Notify clerk of a Deficit and Continuation of Campaign Period
March 25, 2011	Filing deadline for Financial Reports from all nominated candidates (2:00 p.m. deadline)
