West Grey council approved the recommendation from Formworks Architects to proceed with the construction of a new police building that incorporates several energy-conscious features. These building practices are similar to the requirements identified in LEED design and are expected to achieve energy and maintenance savings.
“This is an important investment in our community, and I am pleased with this major step forward,” said West Grey Mayor Christine Robinson. “West Grey is experiencing considerable development and this new facility will ensure our West Grey Police Service, under Chief Rob Martin’s leadership, is equipped to meet the changing needs of our growing community.”
At an estimated cost of $8.8 million dollars, the new police station is being designed to accommodate the current police service as well as projected growth. The building will feature upgrades to achieve better energy efficiency such as upgraded heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and enhanced insulation. Additionally, through the design of the building envelope, air circulation and flow will be greatly improved. Other ‘green’ enhancements will be finalized through the design process.
In late 2019, the municipality secured the future site for the station in the former town of Durham. In July 2020, the design and project management was awarded to Formworks Architects who have been working on the building design with West Grey municipal and police staff. Following the direction from West Grey council at the April 6 meeting, Formworks will proceed with the tendering process. Staff and the architects will be providing additional information to council as the project proceeds and a dedicated webpage is being developed for updates on this project.
