Council Meeting Highlights - May 20, 2025
Mayor Eccles presented certificates of appreciation for the exceptional efforts made to prevent a potential
flooding disaster in Durham caused by the buildup of frazil ice during the winter of 2025. Mayor Eccles presented Certificates of Recognition to the following groups and individuals:
- JT Excavating and Team
- Walker Industries and Team
- Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority Flood Watch Team
- Steve Ayerhart, Municipality of West Grey
Council directed staff to submit requests for delegations respecting rural hospitals and healthcare, infrastructure funding, and Bills 5 and 17 at the upcoming Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference taking place from August 17-20, 2025.
Council authorized staff to enter into a lease agreement with EarlyON for the continued use of the Durham Arena boardroom for early years programming with a term ending December 31, 2026. Since initiating programming at the Durham Arena, EarlyON has supported 572 children through 10 unique programs, including literacy groups, fitness activities, and baby playgroups.
Council authorized the Mayor and Clerk to enter into an agreement with Moorefield Excavating for the South Street Construction contract, contingent on Grey County authorizing the County Warden and Clerk to do the same. South Street construction is required to provide Rockwood Terrace Long Term Care facility with a storm sewer outlet.
Council received a staff report outlining options for managing aggregate extraction in West Grey. The report noted that West Grey could hire a consultant to help develop policies on this issue. Any new policies would need to be incorporated into either the Grey County Official Plan or the West Grey Official Plan. Council provided direction to bring back options for an RFP for services related to a consultant to do the required studies/policy updates.
Council received a staff report on the 2025 grants to organizations and awarded funds to groups throughout West Grey. In total, Council allocated $22,550 in grants to various community groups.
Council shared information about upcoming community events, including:
- Townwide yard sales in Ayton, Elmwood and Neustadt on June 7, 2025.
- Durham Herb Fair on Saturday June 14, 2025, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Riverside Park.
