Council Recognizes Key Contributors for Exceptional Flood Mitigation Efforts

West Grey, ON — At its meeting on May 20, 2025, West Grey Council recognized the extraordinary efforts of those who worked 24/7 for many days and weeks over the course of the winter of 2025 to mitigate a potential flooding disaster in Durham this year.

Residents and businesses have a long history with the flooding from the accumulation of frazil ice, including a flooding disaster in January 1997 that displaced more than 200 residents and caused well over $1.1 million in damages. Once again in early 2025 the accumulation of frazil ice posed a significant threat to the community, and it was through the swift, coordinated response of several dedicated teams and individuals that a serious flooding disaster was prevented.

Honoured for their critical roles were:

  • JT Excavating and Team
  • Walker Industries and Team
  • Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority Flood Watch Team
  • Steve Ayerhart, Municipality of West Grey

West Grey Mayor and Council extended sincere gratitude for the expertise, hard work, and collaboration demonstrated during this challenging time. The efforts of these teams exemplify the strength of community partnerships in ensuring public safety and protecting local infrastructure.
