Ontario Investing $3.74-million in Water Infrastructure in West Grey to Help Build More Homes
West Grey, ON – The Municipality of West Grey, with support from the Government of Ontario, is investing in vital water infrastructure upgrades to ensure safe, reliable service for residents and to support future growth in Durham.
The project aims to upgrade and improve water infrastructure in Durham, ensuring reliable access to clean water and supporting future growth in the community. These enhancements will include modernising pipelines, improving water treatment facilities, and expanding service capacity to meet increasing demand.
The Province of Ontario is contributing $3.74 million to the project through the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund, representing 73 percent of the total cost. The remaining 27 percent, amounting to just over $1.36 million, will be funded through the Durham water and sewer user fees. In total, this initiative will result in an investment of more than $5.1 million to enhance Durham’s water system.
The project includes a series of upgrades that will modernize water supply and storage capacity, reduce water loss, and improve long-term system reliability.
Key improvements include:
- Replacing aging watermains:
- Upgrading the Well 1B Pumphouse to accommodate raw water supply from a new well currently under construction.
- Rehabilitating a 50-year-old concrete reservoir, addressing structural deterioration to improve functionality, and ensure reliable water supply for public health and firefighting needs.
- Commissioning an existing unused storage tank to expand water storage, supporting firefighting capacity, emergency needs, and growing residential developments.
- These investments will ensure Durham’s water system continues to meet Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standards, safeguard public health, and support ongoing residential growth, including new homes and the upcoming Rockwood Terrace long-term care facility.
“This investment is about more than just pipes and pumps – it’s about ensuring that Durham families, businesses, and future residents have a safe, reliable water supply,” said Kevin Eccles, Mayor of West Grey. “With Ontario’s support, these upgrades will help us meet today’s needs while planning responsibly for the future.”
“Ontario is proud to partner with West Grey on these critical infrastructure upgrades,” said Paul Vickers, MPP for Bruce–Grey–Owen Sound. “Reliable water systems are essential for healthy communities and are a key part of enabling more housing across the region.”
Construction will take place over the next three to four years with phased implementation of each sub-project.
