South Street Reconstruction
Project Overview
The South Street Reconstruction Project is a two-year infrastructure initiative designed to support the future Rockwood Terrace Long-Term Care Facility, which is scheduled to open in 2027. In addition to accommodating the needs of this new facility, the project aims to resolve ongoing flooding issues in the area by modernizing underground infrastructure and road design.
Scope of Work
- Road profile upgrades to a complete urban standard
- Installation of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks
- New storm sewer system to improve drainage
- New sanitary sewer system complete with service laterals
- New watermain and individual water service connections
During construction, residents and commuters can expect:
- Temporary road closures and detours, including Garafaxa Street
- Restricted access to driveways and sidewalks at times
- Notifications in advance of any service disruptions
Efforts will be made to minimize inconveniences and maintain safe access for pedestrians and vehicles throughout both phases.
- Tender submissions are being reviewed
- A contractor will be selected following the tender process
- Project schedule and staging details will be communicated to the public before work begins in 2025
Benefits of the Project
The project restores a key transportation link for residents, emergency services, and winter maintenance operations, improves safety by replacing a deteriorated bridge deck, provides a cost-effective use of the existing steel structure, ensures compliance with provincial bridge standards, and supports long-term infrastructure reliability in Normanby Township.
