Council Meeting Highlights - June 16, 2026
Council presented the 2026 Senior of the Year Award to Mary Lou Pfeffer in recognition of her outstanding volunteerism, leadership, and long-standing commitment to the West Grey community. Council expressed gratitude for her many contributions, which have made a meaningful impact on the lives of residents.
Council received a delegation from Barb and Lydia Dyck regarding the Community Garden in Durham. Ms. B. Dyck and Ms. L. Dyck provided a brief overview of recent harvests, community partnerships, and educational opportunities, and asked that local gardeners be further consulted prior to Council making a decision on the proposed community garden policy.
Council directed staff to send letters of support for the following:
- Sustainable funding for public health units via a redistribution of a portion of the land transfer tax to municipalities to address public health funding gaps and the rising share of municipal contributions to public health units.
- Provincial funding to improve hospital finances and capacity.
Council directed staff to advise Grey County Planning Staff that Council supports the incorporation of the modifications to the West Grey Official Plan. West Grey adopted a new Official Plan on December 16, 2025. Grey County Planning Staff have completed a fulsome review of the adopted West Grey Official Plan. County Staff provided West Grey Staff with a list of proposed changes.
Council directed staff to bring forward a bylaw to amend bylaw no. 37-2006 as it relates to zoning bylaw amendment application ZA01.2026 Pulford. The owner of the subject property is proposing to sever three building lots.
A Community Garden Policy was presented to Council for approval, with implementation planned for 2027. Council deferred a decision on the report until the September 15, 2026, pending further discussion with garden users.
Council received a staff report regarding Saugeen Valley Children’s Safety Village - Grant Request. Council granted the request through an in-kind contribution of $300 toward a hall rental for the Saugeen Valley Children’s Safety Village Farm to Table Fundraising Dinner/Dance.
Council approved the 2027 Council calendar. With some exceptions, the 2027 Council calendar largely follows the same schedule as previous Council meeting calendars.
Council directed staff to bring forward a bylaw to name the unnamed road in the Neustadt Industrial Park as Diefenbaker Street. A bylaw to assume the road in the Neustadt Industrial Park was passed in 2019. The road was formally brought into the municipal road network in 2025, but it was not named at that time.
Council shared information about upcoming community events, including:
- Elmwood Firefighters Breakfast June 6, 2026, from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
- Trivia Night on June 18, 2026, at the Neustadt Brewery from 7:00 p.m. until 9 p.m.
- Historic Hike on June 20, 2026, at the Durham Library from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
The next regular Council meeting is July 7, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
