Council Meeting Highlights - May 19, 2026

Council received two delegations from Judi Smelko and Ron Davidson regarding Zoning Bylaw Amendment Application ZA.30.2024 (Proposed Gravel Pit).

Council directed staff to send a letter of support for correspondence received from the Township of Springwater respecting Provincial Bill 100 – Better Regional Governance Act, 2026. The legislation would restructure regional governance in Ontario by granting the Minister authority to directly appoint Regional Chairs in eight major regions.

Council received a staff report regarding ZA30.2024 Tremble Davidson on 382063 Concession 4 NDR. The property owner has applied for Category 3, Class ‘A’ License (over 20,000 tonnes per year extraction above the water table) under the Aggregate Resources Act, and the Zoning Bylaw Amendment under the Planning Act to permit aggregate extraction on the subject lands. Council directed staff to bring forward a bylaw to amend bylaw 37-2006 to give effect to zoning amendment ZA30.2024.

Council received the Q1 2026 Building Department Activity Report for information purposes. The report provides an overview of building activity during the first quarter of 2026, including the number of permits issued, total project values, and collected permit fees.

Council received a staff report regarding West Grey Drinking Water Systems – 2025 Inspection Reports. Council received this information for information purposes. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MOECP) awarded the Durham Drinking Water System an inspection rating of 100 percent and a risk rating of zero percent.

Council directed staff to bring forward a bylaw to adopt the 2026 tax rates. The blended residential tax rate for 2026, covering the Municipality of West Grey, Grey County, and education, is set at 3.17 percent. The final tax billing due dates will be set for Aug 18, 2026, and October 20, 2026.

Council shared information about upcoming community events, including:

  • Neustadt Lions Club Lobsterfest dinner is taking place on May 23, 2026.
  • Community yard sales on June 6, 2026, in Ayton, Elmwood and Neustadt.
  • Elmwood Bingo on Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. at the Elmwood Community Centre.
  • Elmwood Firefighters Breakfast will be held on June 6, 2026.
