Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Cups
The Municipality of West Grey provides residents with free FOG Cups to help collect fats, oils, and grease from cooking. The biodegradable cup can be placed in your household garbage once it is full.
If you do not have a FOG cup, you can also collect fats, oils, and grease in a coffee cup or container and store it in the freezer. Once the container is full, simply dispose of it in your garbage.
How to Use the FOG Cup
-
Pour cooled kitchen fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into the container.
-
Place the lid on and store the container in your fridge or freezer until it is full or ready for disposal.
-
Dispose of the full cup in your household garbage.
Common Household Waste that should not go down the drain
- Gravy, salad dressing, bacon grease, cooking oil, soup, dairy products, meat fats, butter, and margarine should never be poured down the drain.
Impact on Sanitary Sewer and Septic Systems
When fats, oils, and grease are poured down the drain, they are often in a warm liquid form. As they cool, they solidify and form a hardened mass. Over time, these grease buildups restrict the flow of sewage in pipes on private property and in municipal sewer lines.
Blocked pipes caused by grease are a common reason for sewage backups, septic system problems, and sewer overflows. Each year, significant time and municipal resources are required to clean clogged pipes caused by grease entering the sanitary sewer system. Properly disposing of fats, oils, and grease helps protect your home plumbing and the municipal wastewater system.
