Chester Street West and George Street West Watermain Replacement Project – Durham

The Municipality of West Grey will be completing watermain replacement and associated road restoration work on portions of Chester Street West and George Street West in Durham during the 2026 construction season.
This infrastructure renewal project is intended to improve the reliability of the municipal water distribution system, replace aging infrastructure, and enhance long-term service delivery within the project area.

The project includes:
  • Replacement of existing watermain infrastructure;
  • Replacement and reconnection of water services;
  • Installation of new valves, hydrants, and related appurtenances;
  • Localized storm and sanitary sewer improvements where required;
  • Road reconstruction and asphalt restoration;
  • Concrete curb, sidewalk, and driveway restoration;
  • Boulevard and surface restoration.
Project limits generally include:
  • Chester Street West from Bruce Street North to Garafraxa Street North;
  • George Street West from College Street North to Bruce Street North.

Construction started May 8 and is expected to be substantially completed by Fall 2026, weather permitting.
Residents will receive additional notification prior to construction activities commencing within their area.

During construction, temporary lane restrictions, detours, reduced parking availability, and intermittent disruptions to driveway access may occur.
Emergency access and local traffic will be maintained throughout the project. Residents may also experience temporary interruptions to water service during tie-ins and service connections. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible.
The Municipality asks residents and motorists to use caution within the construction zone and follow all posted signage and traffic control measures.

The Municipality is currently working with Contractor and Project Engineer to insure the project stays on time and within budget.

Additional public notices and construction updates will be provided as the project progresses.

This project will:
  • Improve reliability of the municipal water system;
  • Reduce risk of future watermain breaks and service disruptions;
  • Improve long-term infrastructure performance;
  • Enhance fire protection capabilities;
  • Restore roadway and surface infrastructure within the project area;
  • Support continued growth and investment within the community.
