Remarrying after a divorce

Divorced in Canada

You must submit official proof of the divorce when you apply for a marriage licence. This can be the original or a court-certified copy of a:

  • Final decree
  • Certificate of divorce

A certified copy of either of the above divorce documents may be obtained from the court office that granted the divorce. A Decree Nisi, Divorce Order or Judgement is not acceptable. All documents will be returned.

If you do not know where your divorce was granted you can contact the Central Registry of Divorce Proceedings or 1-613-957-4519.

Divorced outside of Canada (foreign divorce)

If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide certain documents to prove that you are no longer married. The Office of the Registrar General for the province of Ontario needs to validate these documents and provide authorization in order for you to get a marriage licence. For more information, contact the Marriage Office at 1-800-461-2156 (toll-free) or visit Service Ontario.

Civil marriage solemnization services

The municipality has authorized marriage officiants on staff to provide civil marriage services. Municipal officiants are able to officiate civil marriage ceremonies anywhere in Ontario. With three ceremonies to choose from, these ceremonies are an excellent option for couples seeking a non-denominational ceremony.

Ceremonies can be booked for a fee any day of the year, subject to availability.

To inquire about civil marriage services or to book an officiant, please contact the clerk's department.

Booking a civil marriage
  1. Call the clerk's office at 519-369-2200 ext. 229 or email clerk@westgrey.com for further information or to book a civil marriage.
  2. Pay the required fees by debit/cash/cheque payable to the Municipality of West Grey prior to the ceremony.
Who can officiate my marriage?
The municipality has a list of trained officiants who can legally officiate your marriage.

Couples who wish to have a friend or relative perform their wedding ceremony should be aware of the legal marriage ceremony requirements in Ontario. Once a couple has been legally married by a registered religious official or civil marriage officiant as set out by the province, couples can create their own 'renewal of vows ceremony' and have it performed by a person of their choice in front of family and friends.
Who can get married?

Anyone over the age of 16 years old can get married in Ontario. If you are under 18 years of age you will need consent from your parents or legal guardians. Your parents or legal guardians must also be present at the time you submit your marriage licence application.

Everyone is welcome to apply for a marriage licence and get married in Ontario, whether you live here permanently or temporarily. There are no gender, residency, citizenship or medical requirements when applying for a marriage licence. The requirements are the same for everyone.

Wedding ceremonies

Your wedding day is special and we look forward to helping you make this important day beautiful and memorable. Please contact the municipality at 519-369-2200 to speak to a civil officiant about performing your ceremony. There are three options available for your civil ceremony. Sample ceremonies are provided as part of our civil marriage services. Our staff will meet with you prior to your wedding to prepare your ceremony.

Facility bookings

The council chambers at 402813 Grey Road 4, Durham are available for civil marriage solemnization services, subject to availability.

We can officiate your marriage ceremony at a location of your choice. There are many beautiful municipal venues to host a wedding. All municipal facilities have accessible washrooms, tables and chairs and many have bars and full kitchens designed to accommodate caterers and food preparation. You can book these venues by visiting our facility booking calendar or by calling 519-369-2200 ext. 240.
