Curbside Collection

Changes to West Grey’s waste collection program will take effect June 29, 2026. The Municipality will transition from clear bags to cart-based collection.

What residents need to know:

  • Bag tags will no longer be required after June 29, 2026
  • Carts will be delivered between mid-May and June 29, 2026
  • Continue using bag tags until June 29, 2026
  • Bag tags are non-refundable so please ensure you only buy what you need
  • Recycling remains unchanged
  • The program will be administered by Waste Management

The waste collection schedule will remain the same, with no changes to collection days.

Collection Schedule

Placement: Place your cart at the end of your driveway, close to the road.

  • Set it on level ground
  • Keep it clear of snowbanks and obstacles
  • Do not place it on the road or sidewalk

Direction: Position your cart so it can be easily accessed by the collection truck.

  • Wheels facing your home
  • Front of the cart facing the road

Spacing: Leave enough room around your cart so the truck’s mechanical arm can lift it.

  • At least 3 feet (1 metre) between carts
  • At least 3 feet (1 metre) from other objects (cars, mailboxes, etc.)

Lid and Contents: Make sure your cart can open properly when it is lifted.

  • Keep the lid closed
  • Do not place items on top of the lid
  • Do not tie or secure the lid shut

The carts will be equipped with wildlife-proof lid to discourage common wildlife from from access.

Overhead Clearance: The truck needs space above the cart to lift it safely.

  • Keep the area above your cart clear
  • Avoid placing carts under:
    • Tree branches
    • Wires
    • Structures

If your cart is not set out properly, it may not be collected.

Bag tags are still available for purchase; however, they will no longer be accepted after June 29, 2026, as the Municipality of West Grey transitions to a cart-based collection system.

Residents are encouraged to purchase only the number of bag tags they will need before this change takes effect.

The Municipality currently uses a bag tag program to support waste reduction and encourage recycling. A bag tag is required for each bag placed at the curb until June 29, 2026.

  • Each bag or container must not exceed 40 lbs (18 kg)
  • Bag tags are $3.50 and available at participating retail locations
  • Bag tags are non-refundable

Starting June 29, you will have received your new curbside collection cart. The new cart-based system improves safety for collection workers, supports more consistent and reliable service, adds weekly organics collection, increases long-term cost efficiency, keeps waste contained to reduce litter and wildlife issues, and eliminates the need for bag tags.
